She Asked for a Rainbow...

So thats what she got!
Usually she asks for a strawberry cake.
Then she wanted to make a watermelon pie..... with cheese! ugh!
So, when she asked for a rainbow cake I had to figure something out!

Yes, I could have done the store bought swirly rainbow cake mix...
But what fun is that?

Instead I used a good old white cake recipe.
Split up the batter,
Added obscene amounts of food coloring to each little bowl.
Poured the multi-colored batter into the prepared pans one at a time layering it.

"Groovy Man!"
And baked it right on up!
I frosted it with plain white frosting, so she has no idea what it looked like inside.
When we sliced into it she was thrilled!

Bake a rainbow!!
You'll be glad you did!
Or... at the very least you can have a flashback to your "Hippie days".
(My 16 yr old boys called it the Bob Marley cake! )

***TIP (thanks for reminding me Shelby!!) I did reduce the liquid in the original white cake recipe by a scant 1/4 of a cup to compensate for all the food coloring! ***

  1. What a great idea! I love it! I'm going to link to it tomorrow in my weekly Things to Write Home About post. :)

  2. that is the cleverest thing i've ever seen! i can't wait to try one myself! you rawk girlie! you rawk!

  3. I find it hard to believe that the boys knew who Bob Marley is... unless he has a song on Guitar Hero.

    - your spoiled rotten, "city girl", little sister

  4. I love this!! The pre-baked concoction looks like paint! Good job. I'll have to remember this for the one rare occasion where I bake a real cake.

  5. Bethany...
It was not one of my boys who knew who Bob was.... it was their friend.. Ezra. ;)

  6. That is soooo fun! I can't wait to make one with my little guy!

  7. That's awesome! You are the coolest mom!

One question, though: Do the amounts of food color you have to use to get such vibrant colors alter the taste of the cake at all? I have had BAD BAD BAD experiences with red before but it might've just been me!

  8. Shelby,
Good Question... I did in fact, reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by a scant 1/4 of a cup. :)

  9. How fun! I'm sure any kid would love this cake!

  10. What a great idea! I have 2 birthdays coming up (for my day care kids) and they would LOVE this!
Not that they deserve it, but they will love it anyway. ;-)

  11. What a pretty cake! I love it. I'm going to have to remember that for the next birthday we have around here. Thanks for sharing it and posting the pictures.

  12. you could also use the gel food coloring like wilton icing colors to get some intense colors without haveing to adjust your liquid amounts. red and black are horrible tasting in large amounts but wilton does make a no taste red. it's not quite as deep a red as the regular bitter one, but it doesn't taste bitter. i've used it to make red roses and they came out great.

  13. I'm leaving you more than a comment!! I'm leaving you an amazing award.......go check out my blog!

Love your site, absolutely one of my daily reads!

  14. What a fun cake! Did your mouths turn colorful too? :)
Did you use that liquid food coloring or gel? The gel is better, and your colors are bright, so I was just wondering.

I'll have to try to remember to watch your episode!

  15. So, was it your family on Wife Swap? Email me at shondy26@hotmail.com. I love that shw.

  16. Shonda.
Yep, we were on wife swap. there is a link to it under Most Requested Posts in the middle section of the main page.

  17. How pretty. A few sprinkles on the icing and that would be a perfect birthday cake for me!

  18. I enjoy your blog. I have given you 3 awards. You can check it out here:

  19. Wow. You are totally my hero! I wonder how tough it would be as cupcakes?

  20. Oh I love this! I've gotta try this one day!

  21. You must be an awesome mom, to do that for your kid! Maybe you should invest in some decorator's food coloring (i.e. the pasty kind), to save from emptying so many of the little bottles and disrupting your liquid balance)?

Me, I can't bake. So what do I know!?

  22. omg!! That is so awesome! Just did one of the kids birthdays, but the other one isn't far away, and it's on St. Patrick's Day, I think I will do it all green....I've never even thought of coloring the cake mix!! Thank you so much for the great idea!

  23. Hi! This looks amazing and will be perfect for a Willy Wonka themed party I am throwing! Question, how did you add the coloring and how much of it exactly ( you mentioned to reduce the liquid amount in the batter) Thanks so much I am so excited about making this!!
