  1. My husband LOVES tater-tot casserole! I don't make it that often though b/c it's pretty darn fattening. My sister made hers last week with green peppers and said it was a nice addition.

  17. This shit looks disgusting. My mother always told me -the first impression is the most important in life- and when we are talking about food, I think that phrase should be used too... but I guess you disagree because this dish looks T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E.

    2. Yep, you can't force people to have class!! How about using a little tact in your comments, kamagra??

    3. Totally uncalled for and unnecessary, buddy. I am sure your mother might also have told you that when you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it...

    4. Good grief kamagra! Your mother may have taught you about first impressions, but its pretty clear she didn't do too well in teaching you manners! Shame on you and grow up!

    8. I have often found with food that if it looks bad it is probably delicious.

      Delete
    9. That was completely out of order. From the first impression of you by reading your post you learned nothing from your mother!! My mom always said if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. Try using that in your life....!

      Delete
    10. Obviously you did not learn from your mother...
you just made a bad first impression.

    11. You obviously eat with the same mouth you speak with...if I was your Mom I would totally be embrassed of you for speaking of food this way. If you were really hungry you wouldn't be so smart mouth. You apparently have never had to be grateful for what was put before you.

  18. Your mother is right, the first impression is the most important. The first impression that the people reading this blog have of you is likely that you are rude and lacking character. If you don't like the look of something, don't make it! What made you think it was a good idea to leave that comment?

    4. Melanie, that's nothing but the TRUTH!!!

  26. From North Carolina, now living in South Africa and we don't have frozen tater tots here. Any suggestions on how to make with fresh potatoes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Blairadise, I nuked 3 large potatoes until they were mostly done, about 10 min in my little microwave. I then let them cool for about 10-15 minutes, otherwise they are pretty painful to handle. Also, when you slice the potatoes they hold together better when cooled down some. I sliced the potatoes into about 1/4 inch thick medallions and layered them on top of the meat mixture. Then I brushed the potatoes with a bit of vegetable oil and seasoned with Lawry's seasoned salt. I didn't measure the Lawry's, I just sprinkled enough to tint the potatoes a bit. Then I baked it uncovered for 40 min, took it out and sprinkled some cheese on top, then baked another 10 min. The tops of the potatoes are nice and crispy on top, and tender in the middle. I like a lot of potatoes, so next time I may add 1 or 2 more of them. Very yummy!

      Delete
    2. Mashed potatoes work too. But then it would Shepards pie.

      Delete
  27. Blairadise, I would think boiling potatoes until semi cooked- then shredding them before adding them to the mix.

Looks great. Saw it on Pinterest and had to come check out your blog. Love it!

  31. I use ground turkey (I can't remember the last time I even bought ground beef). Also frozen french cut green beans are great in it with cream of mushroom. If you mix a little pepper jack cheese in with the cheddar, it gives it some zing. Thanks for the starting point of a great meal.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Can you do both cream of mushroom, and cream of celery if you are doubling the recipe? Or does it make it taste weird...

    1. The first time I made it I didn't have the cream soup. I only had cream of potato. I added some milk because cream of potato is thicker. I know it's a lot of potato bunt added some frozen vegetables to the mix to off set all the potato. It turned out great!

  72. I have grown up with Tater Tot Cass., but made a little different; push raw beef into bottom of 13x9 baking pan, pour cream of Ck soup over and spread evenly, lay American Cheese slices over soup, then line up tater tots to cover cheese. Bake 1 hr at 350 and 15 mins @ 375.

    ReplyDelete
  73. They used to serve this without the cheese in juvie at least once a week.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Whenever I make this I always add a bag, sometimes two, of frozen mixed vegetables over the ground beef. Then pour cream of mushroom soup that's been mixed with a little heavy cream over the veggies/ground beef. Then put an entire bag of tater tots on top. Son delicious with the veggies!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I make this with the cheddar soup or if I want a little kick to it, I use the nacho soup from campbells. I also add a can of green beans on top of the meat/soup mixture and then add the tater tots.

  84. My family has been enjoying this TatorTot Casserole for years. For a change we also make it TexMex style sometimes with taco seasoned meat, chopped red and green bell peppers, Nacho cheese soup, and add a can of corn.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I make this a lot during the winter months (which is a lot, I live in the midwest)! I add a few things which always make people ask what I did to it--and my husband, who hates leftovers, takes it for lunch the next day! Brown the meat with onion, drain. Add 1 can cream of mushroom, 1 Tbsp Miracle Whip (fat free is ok), 2 Tbsp fat free sour cream, and 3-4 shakes of Worcestershire. Cook a small bag of mixed veggies (gr beans, corn, carrots, and peas) in micro according to pkg. Thaw a dinner plate full of tater tots in microwave. Then, start assembling: 1/2 the meat mixture, stick in some tater tots, then 1/2 the veggies, and a sprinkling of shredded cheese. Then last 1/2 of meat, remaining veggies, and rest of cheese. Top with frozen tater tots--if you have leftover "thawed" tots put those in the center (I like to sprinkle seasoned salt on top of them). Throw it in the oven and enjoy! Sometimes I add in celery to cook with the meat & onion.

  86. Hi I'm from South Africa. What is Tater Tot???? I'm confused?????

    ReplyDelete
  87. BEST. RECIPE. EVAARRRRRR.
Here is how I doubled the recipe and made a few changes.
    Sauteed 1/2 onion with
    1 1/2 pound ground beef
    1/2 pound jimmy deans sausage
after cooking and draining I laid it on the bottom of my 9x13 baking dish. I then put an even layer of frozen green beans (trying to get some veggies in for the kids) and then layered one can cream of chicken AND one can cream of celery with my spatula evenly. Sprinkled on a layer of sharp cheddar cheese, then placed my tater tots on evenly. I baked for 40 minutes at 375 and the last 10 minutes sprinkled some more cheddar.

DELLIICIIIOUUSSS! The kids and the husband LOVED IT! Will definitely be making this again! I think I would like to try a healthier version and maybe try making it with ground turkey?? Not sure how it would turn out.

  95. I have been making this for years. I use whatever cream soup I have-cream of celery or mushroom or potato. You can use a combination if you are doubling. I mix the cream soup with skim milk to thin it to pouring consistency, add shredded low fat cheddar and dried parsley. I add the onion to the ground turkey or beef while I brown it. I alternate layers of the meat and tater tots then pour the soup over it. Top with shredded cheddar. It is delicious with ketchup and Frank's Red Hot. I usually serve peas and my guys put them on top.

  102. Anonymous, hash browns and tator tots are not the same thing, but I don't see why you couldn't put a layer of hash browns on the top of the casserole. This is on the menu tomorrow night at the request of several of the guests that are coming for dinner. I always throw in a bag of frozen mixed veggies, and make sure that I almost over season the beef, because it can be a little bland other wise. Some cheese on top of the tator tots and heat it through. Ok...now I'm hungry...

I added a 3/4 bag of frozen sweet corn thawed of course and a 1/2 bag of frozen FRENCH CUT green beans, again thawed as well as a small bag of hashbrowns putting a layer on the bottom and mixing in the other with the corn and beans. If you cannot find the french cut beans in a bag, you could use them from a can. I prefer frozen bag veggies vs. canned, alot better flavor with ll of their nutrients without all the chemicals. Aldi's has the best tasting sweet corn hands down, tastes like it was just shaved off the cob!

    ReplyDelete
  108. I use:

    1 lbs ground beef
    1/2 med. onion, chopped
1 can cream of mushroom soup
    1/4 cup milk
4 cups mixed frozen vegetables (I use country blend)
    2 cups shredded cheddar
    1 package tater tots

I brown the meat and onion (have used onion flakes in a pinch...also add black pepper, garlic powder, Cavender's Greek Seasoning and Oregano). Spoon into a 9x13 baking dish sprayed with cooking spray. Mix soup and milk until creamy. Pour and spread over beef. Top with frozen veggies, then cheese and then tater tots. (You can also use the tater crowns). I bake, uncovered, at 375° for 45 minutes to 1 hour...making sure tots are nice and brown and center is heated through.

This is another favorite of my hubby and son...quick to make, easy to clean up and it's all in one dish. Can't beat that!!

  110. Your recipe was the only one that I consider complete for novice cooks like me. I liked especially...

"1 (10 1/2 ounce) can condensed cream of celery or cream of chicken soup (undiluted)"

  125. Thanks for the recipe! I'm babysitting my five siblings and needed something simple for dinner. I substituted bacon for the beef since we were out, and sprinkled onion powder in the cream of chicken. So easy and quick; I even got back to babysitting before one of them got killed ;) Thanks!

  128. This recipe looks fab - thanks. In Australia I think the Tater Tots are called Potato Gems, from the Supermarket. They look the same and this is what I am going to use anyway (tiny grated potato balls which have been fried and frozen).

  129. I make this all the time BUT I also add veggies to the meat/soup layer. I usually use 1 can of green beans (cut style) or about 1 to 1-1/2 cups frozen peas, but almost any veggie will work but I think it needs to be not raw or it won't cook through. Yum!

  130. My family loves this dish!! I usually add frozen corn and green beans to it as well as some bbq sauce in the creamed soup for a good flavor. Love 1 dish dinners and we never have left overs :)

  136. Simple and quick casserole. I decided to add in a can of pinto beans and a can of diced tomato, to make it a more hearty meal. Also added additional seasoning garlic and onion powder. Perfect weeknight meal.

  137. Just made this. I didn't have cream of celery or mushroom, so I used cream of onion and added celery powder. I also added Rotel tomatoes to the meat for some zing. Sooo stinkin good. Thanks for reminding me of this recipe. As we can see from all the comments, it easily can be adjusted to make a variety of caserole. Good Job!!

  138. I adore potato tot meal, this formula is much the same as mine, yet I don't include ketchup. I likewise include a depleted jar of corn and a depleted jar of green beans for additional nourishment, and a 1/some drain blended into release it up and extend the soup. MMMM Good!
