Look at Those Buns!!! (Homemade Hotdog & Hamburger Buns)

Two days ago, when I posted my Case Study in Wienerology,
I expected to be contacted about my groundbreaking new technique for getting inside the human psyche.
Perhaps I would be published in some wonderfully intelligent medical journal.
Maybe even be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize!!

But... Nooooo
Everyone just wanted my bun recipe

ok fine!
here is recipe #1...
You can even use your breadmaker!!
It couldn't be easier!

Look at Those Buns!!
Homemade Hamburger or Hot Dog Buns

(using a Bread Maker)

Ingredients
  • 1 1/4 cups milk, slightly warmed
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 3/4 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
Directions
(hamburger buns, if you want hot dog buns. cut 'em to that shape)
  1. Place all ingredients in pan of bread machine, according to manufacturer's directions.
  2. Select dough setting.
  3. When cycle is complete, turn out onto floured surface.
  4. Cut dough in half and roll each half out to a 1" thick circle.
  5. Cut each half into six 3 1/2" rounds with inverted glass as a cutter.
  6. Place on greased baking sheet far apart and brush with melted butter.
  7. Cover and let rise until doubled, about one hour.
  8. Bake at 350° for 9 minutes.
Note: Oven temperatures vary so check after 9 minutes to see if done.
**TIP** My neighbor's took 20 minutes to be done... so it really does depend on your oven, just watch 'em.

  1. I don't have a Bread Maker :-(
But I'm going to make these buns anyway!
    Thank you for the recipe.

  2. Thanks! My bread machine is only good for mixing (the heating element went out), so I"ll have to use my Kitchen Aid. For the hot dog buns, do you cut pieces of dough, then roll them like a log? I don't bake many hand shaped breads, so I have no idea, lol.

  3. I tried this today. They taste fantastic but were too thin to use as hamburger buns. I'll have to roll them thicker next time.

I don't have a bread machine but just modified the recipe to do the old fashioned way.

Also, I used my oven thermometer to make sure the oven was at 350, but it still took about 13-14 minutes for them to get done.

Thank you for this recipe! I have often thought about making my own hamburger and hot dog buns since I love making homemade bread, but I was never brave enough to try.

  5. Made these today and they're perfect! I'm so pleased. They are wonderfully light and chewy. I made four hamburger buns and six large hotdog buns.

  6. I made these yesterday for our BBQ we were hosting and they were a big hit! Everyone loved them! I came across this recipe looking for an alternative to make at home because my son is allergic to soy so almost everything he eats has to be homemade, so not only were these totally delicious but my son could enjoy them as well! Thanks for the great recipe!! :D

  9. On rare, happy occasions I find what I call a "breakthrough" recipe; one that is so good that it forever replaces whatever we used to eat before its discovery, and becomes a family standard. This is such a recipe. I first tried it as hamburger & hot dog buns on July 27th, with good results but I had difficulty forming the buns to the desired shape. But, the flavor was superb, so I tried making a loaf of white bread using it. It has since become my go-to standard for making loaves of white bread in the bread machine. The flavor is absolutely delicious, the texture is perfect (soft but not mushy), it's wonderful toasted or untoasted, it has no preservatives to enhance shelf life (keeps for about a week in the 'fridge), it freezes beautifully, and costs about $.65 per loaf. My 13 yo daughter, when she first tried it, said "this is a breakthrough bread!". I whole-heartedly agree - thank-you, from our family, for this excellent recipe. -Frank

  10. Made these the other day because I did not have any hamburger buns on hand, and I have been wanting to use my bread maker more...I used half white whole wheat flour. They tasted great! I have never worked with bread dough before, so I have to get a more practice on that part, but I will be making them again tonight as rolls to go with dinner...can't wait! Yum :)
